NATIONAL
June 1
- Lt. General Hari Prasad took over as the new General Officer Commanding-in-chief of the army’s Northern Command, responsible for operations in Jammu & Kashmir.
- The Central Bureau of Investigation has formed an Economic Intelligence Wing to tackle white-collar crime.
- The Congress Party has pledged full support to the Central Government on its fresh peace initiative with Pakistan.
June 2
- For the second time in less than a week, India successfully test-fired the surface-to-air high altitude interception Akash missile from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea.
- Hundreds of people in Mumbai made their way into the Guinness Book by donating a record 5,500 units of blood on a single day in the largest peacetime blood donation camp ever held.
June 3
- India has asked Pakistan to send a team of technical experts to work on the modalities for resuming the Delhi-Lahore bus service, which could start as early as July 1.
- Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee returned to New Delhi after a week-long tour of Germany, France and Russia.
June 4
- A MiG-21 crashed near Uttarlai air base in Rajsthan, killing its pilot.
June 5
- The Union Cabinet cleared a proposal to include new castes and communities in the central list of Other Backward Classes in respect of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajsthan, Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Orissa and West Bengal.
- In an attempt to make the conditional access system consumer friendly, the Government issued a notification asking cable operators to declare pay channel rates by June 15.
- The Government suspended Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Coal India Ltd. N.K. Sharma on alleged corruption charges and abuse of official position.
June 6
- Asian Games medal winner and Arjun awardee long distance runner, Shivnath Singh passed away in Jamshedpur.
June 7
- Deputy Prime Minister Shri L.K. Advani left for a 10-day visit to the US and Britain.
- India’s foreign exchange reserves crossed the $81 billion mark following inflows of $513 million during the week ending May 30.
June 8
- Infosys Technologies Chairman, N.R. Narayana Murthy has become the first Indian to win the Ernst & Young world entrepreneur of the year award.
June 9
- Despite stiff resistance from the Bar Council of India, India has expressed its willingness to the World Trade Organisation to allow foreign lawyers to practice in Indian courts on a reciprocal basis under the General Agreement on Trade and Service.
June 10
- The Archaeology Survey of India has submitted a report to the Allahabad High Court saying it has found no evidence of a structure under the demolished Babri Masjid so far.
- The medium range surface-to-air missile Akash successfully test-fired from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-sea.
- Ms. K.J. Udeshi, India’s first ever woman Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India took charge of her job.
June 11
- Finance Secretary, S. Narayan has been appointed Secretary to the Prime Minister, while Expenditure Secretary, D.C. Gupta would be the new Finance Secretary.
- Vidya Vahini, a pilot educational project of the Ministry of Information Technology is formally launched by the Prime Minister and its scope extended to 60,000 schools.
June 12
- The Government has allowed travel agents to issue e-mail tickets to airline passengers.
- The former Judge, M. Rama Jois sworn in 27th Governor of Bihar, while Ved Prakash Marwah and Arvind Dave sworn in Governors of Jharkhand and Manipur respectively.
June 13
- The US Ambassador to India, Mr. Robert Blackwill said Pakistan had not stopped cross-border terrorism against India.
- The Serb Hind Shiromani Akali Dal led by Mr. Gurcharan Singh Tohra formally merged with Shri Prakash Singh Badal’s Shiromani Akali Dal, ending four years of differences.
June 14
- India wants the proposed stabilisation force in Iraq to be modelled on the International Security Assistant Force in Afghanistan, which has the sanction of the UN Security Council.
June 15
- Faced with budgetary constraints, Israel has decided to close down its general consulate in Mumbai.

June 1
- US President Mr. George W. Bush has assured Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee that he will talk to Pervez Musharraf on the need to end cross-border terrorism when he meets him in Washington later this month.
June 2
- A rocket carrying the European orbiter, Mars Express took off from Kazakhstan. It is Europe’s first ever bid to explore Mars.
- The Pakistan Foreign Minister Mr. Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri has said that Islamabad has no Alladin’s Lamp to stop cross-border terrorism in Kashmir, but is doing its level best to control it.
June 3
- Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province came under Islamic Sharia law for the first time in the country’s 56-year history.
June 4
- Nepal’s King Mr. Gyanendra appointed Shri Surya Bahadur Thapa as new Prime Minister of the country.
- Miss Dominican Republic Amelia Vega won the Miss Universe 2003 pagent at the Figali Convention Centre in Panama City.
- In a landmark summit, Israelis and Palestinians have decided to shed violence and revive their stalled peace process.
June 5
- The Pakistan Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali has said that the Kashmir dispute could not be resolved by converting the Line of Control into a permanent border.
June 6
- Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. and Russia’s Stankoimport have signed a $300 million deal for supply of equipment to produce the Sukhoi SU-30 MKI fighter jets.
- Russia’s Lower House of Parliament declared a limited amnesty for Chechen rebels who will surrender to the authorities by August end.
June 7
- The Vatican has down played an e-mail threat of an attack on Pope John Paul II during his trip to Croatia.
- More than 13,000 Arab and Muslim men who came forward earlier this year to register with the immigration authorities in the US may now face deportation for illegal stay.
June 8
- India beat Australia by 5-3, winning the second leg of three-nation invitational hockey tournament in Sydney.
June 9
- UK ruled out adopting the Euro currency for now.
- The Australian cricketer, Steve Waugh has been named an officer of the order of Australia for his charity work in India.
June 10
- Professor Ian Wilmut, creator of the first cloned sheep Dolly has been permitted to work with human eggs in an experiment that could lead to the first human cloning.
- US President, Mr. George W Bush has greatly appreciated the fresh initiative for peace with Pakistan undertaken by Prime Minister Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee.
June 11
- The Lahore High Court ruled that the Pakistan’s President Mr. Pervez Musharraf’s election is valid under the law. It also said tht he is legally entitled to hold the offices of Presidency as well as Chief of Army.
June 12
- Oscar winning actor Gregory Peck, one of the last of the great stars from Hollywood’s golden era passed away in Los Angeles.
- US President, Mr. George W. Bush agreed to consider India’s plea to stop the proposed delivery of F-16 aircraft to Pakistan.
June 13
- US troops killed 27 people after coming under attack in Balad, northeast of Baghdad.
June 14
- Indian junior girls duo, Sania Mirza and Sanaa Bhambri have won the ITF Grade-I junior world ranking tournament at Frankfurt.
- A cold war barrier was crossed when the two Koreas, North and South, re-connected a railway line which remained cut since the end of the Korean war in 1953.
