February 16
- Reserve Bank of India slashes bank rate and cash reserve ratio (CRR) by half a
percentage point.
February 17
- International Fleet Review is organised by Indian Navy to celebrate the Golden Jubilee
of the Indian Republic, in Mumbai.
- Government announces temporary suspension of mining operations in several mines of Coal
India Ltd. citing faulty surveying methods responsible for the Bagdigi mine tragedy.
- Government allows 100 per cent FDI in voice mail and audiotex services.
February 18
- Finance Ministry imposes a provisional anti-dumping duty on all imports of aniline from
the EU countries.
February 19
- President K.R. Narayanan addresses both the Houses of Parliament on the first day of
Budget session.
February 20
- Veteran CPI leader and longest serving parliamentarian, Indrajit Gupta passes away in
Kolkata.
February 21
- Government extends current ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir for three months.
- Nearly 25 lakh devotees took a holy dip in the Sangam on the occasion of Mahashivaratri,
marking the culmination of the first Mahakumbh of the millennium.
- Government decides to sell 51 per cent equity in Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd to
Sterlite Industries for Rs.551.5 crore.
February 22
- Sikhbir Singh Badal, son of Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal, is declared
elected to the Rajya Sabha in biennial elections.
- Parliament passes the Bill to amend the Chit Funds Act to regulate the functioning of
chit fund agencies. However, the Lok Sabha members sought for a comprehensive legislation
for a stringent action against fly-by-night operators.
February 23
- The 2000-2001 Economic Survey is presented to Parliament. It calls for "full-steam
ahead" reforms including total privatisation of the public sector, reduction in
interest on small savings, pension and provident funds.
- Former BCCI president I.S. Bindra is restrained from attending the BCCI board meetings
for two years.
- Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi wins the Marwahi Assembly seat.
- India clears the technical hurdle for a meeting for the South Asian leaders.
February 24
- Justice D.P. Wadhwa, retired judge of Supreme Court is appointed as President of
National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.
February 26
- Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee presents Railway Budget in Parliament without any
passenger fare hike. Transportation rates for essential commodities, parcels, luggage and
urea are exempted from the hike.
February 27
- Government clears 23 foreign direct investment proposals worth Rs.308 crore.
- India and Morocco agree to intensify bilateral engagement by holding regular
consultations at official levels.
February 28
- Union Finance Minister presents new millennium's first budget in Parliament. The main
highlights of the budget are : growth rate targeted at 7 per cent, fiscal deficit at 4.7
per cent, inflation below 8 per cent, foreign TV channels to be taxed and 10 per cent job
cuts in government in next five years.
- Vice Chief of Naval Staff Admiral P.J. Jacob retires.
INTERNATIONAL
February 16
- US and British warplanes struck Iraqi air defense facilities outside a no-fly zone south
of Baghdad.
February 17
- Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee condemns the bombing of Baghdad by American and
British warplanes.
February 22
- US warplanes again strike Iraqi air defence targets in northern Iraq.
February 26
- Australian cricketer Sir Donald Bradman, 92, is dead.
February 28
- Twenty one terrorist organisations are banned in Britain under New Terrorism Act, 2000.
